The surface temperature of the sample is the most important aging factor except radiation. The blackboard indicates the highest temperature that the sample surface may reach.

For historical reasons, two different types of blackboard thermometers (BPT) are used. One is a blackboard mounted on an insulating plastic board widely used in European countries and ISO. It is also called a black standard thermometer (BST). The other is the non-insulated blackboard used by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Due to different exposure conditions, the temperature displayed by the black standard thermometer will be higher than that of the blackboard thermometer, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. Because there are two types of black standard thermometer and blackboard thermometer, the test report should indicate the type of thermometer used.
